NFPA 730

NFPA 730, Guide for Premises Security is a guide that describes construction, protection, occupancy features, and practices intended to reduce security vulnerabilities to life and property. NFPA defines a guide as “a document that is advisory or informative in nature and that contains only nonmandatory provisions. A guide may contain mandatory statements such as when a guide can be used, but the document as a whole is not suitable for adoption into law.” So NFPA 730 is just recommendations. It basically says that you should form a team and do a needs assessment. It includes commercial properties as well as One & Two family dwellings. Visit the NFPA Site for more information

NFPA 731

NFPA 731, Standard for the Installation of Electronic Premises Security Systems NFPA 731 provides specifications for installing electronic security systems in the included types of facilities. NFPA defines a Standard as a document, the main text of which contains only mandatory provisions using the word “shall” to indicate requirements and which is in a form generally suitable for mandatory reference by another standard or code or for adoption into law. Nonmandatory provisions are located in an appendix or annex, footnote, or fine-print note and are not to be considered a part of the requirements of a standard.  Visit the NFPA Site for more information

ASIS General Security Risk Assessment Guideline

ASIS participated in the NFPA project but developed their own guidelines including the General Security Risk Assessment Guideline that is designed to allow you to assess, identify and communicate risk in a specific facility and then identify appropriate solutions.
